Are Essential Oils Harmful?

Unfortunately, yes. They can be when used inappropriately. Just because something is "natural" and "pure," doesn't mean its not a potent substance. When used undiluted and long-term, essential oils have been known to cause adverse effects on adults, children, and animals.

We've heard stories recently where a baby was treated with undiluted peppermint and had a seizure, a woman had an undiluted treatment and still has ringing in her ear, another woman ingested lemon oil daily in her water and her tongue went numb, and more...

Possible adverse effects from overuse of undiluted essential oils include:

  • Redness, rashes, blistering

  • Itching, general irritation

  • Chemical burning

  • Pigmentation changes

  • Headaches

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhea

  • Interference with medication

  • Alters blood pressure

  • Bleeding

  • Sores

  • Numbness, tingling

  • Nerve deadening
