Re-Start to Finish: The Future of Atlantic Institute

I’m excited to share the Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy (AIA) is growing larger and has a new vision for the future.

In the past few years, I thought I was slowing down but recently have realized that I have a lot more work to do before I can rest. I have created and participated in the growth of aromatherapy since it began in the 1970s here in the USA and have travelled the world in pursuit of sharing. Now I see that I need to “re-start” and get materials I have amassed in order to finish what I started in 1989, the AIA. So no rest for me just yet! (And did I mention now having to learn to blog, tweet, and other new tricks like social media?)

Anyone with a child would love to hear them say one day, “I want to be a part of what you have created.” I’ve been blessed to feel that joy. Two years ago my daughter Nyssa expressed interest in the AIA and moving us forward. That started our journey to update and generally revise the AIA starting with making her our Assistant Director and bringing her in as an instructor and as an approved provider with AIA for continuing education via Board of Massage.  We updated live classes as we co-taught this past summer.  By fall the AIA site was updated and my new personal website Vintage Aromatherapist went live. We are working now on online education and more advanced studies as we expand learning opportunities and move into the future. (And did I mention I am beaming, dreams are coming true, and I am doing a happy dance?)

Last fall I spoke at the Alliance International Aromatherapy conference in St. Petersburg.  I wrote a 30 page paper on my history as a pioneer in aromatherapy in the USA which got whittled down into 10 pages for the conference along with a 15 min. presentation. The point was to show that aromatherapy has a rich history as even though it only came into the US 40 years ago. Vintage Aromatherapist was created to house this history and my personal contribution. Besides a place for that paper, this will be a place to share collective wisdom about the early days from contributions by others who were pioneers (Colleen, Pat and Gerri, Emilee, Mindy, and others), and anyone who feels they are a Vintage Aromatherapist! (Please write a guest blog in return for your own award!) Until others do, I will continue to embellish my confessions from the paper, and record the historical tidbits I know of, about my journey with the beauty, nurturing, and healing that essential oils bring into our lives. I hope readers enjoy it. (check it out here

I am extremely grateful this year for the welcome growth of Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy and the re-start my daughter provided. She has always been a great teacher, especially to me and I am honored to have her continue my legacy in her own healing center. Life truly is an Upward Spiral.
